Witches are perhaps one of the most common influences in films or literature, with the characters often associated with the concepts of ‘magic’, ‘mystery’ and ‘strength’. Their representation is either in the full of wicked disorder, or as a heroin who fights against an unjust society waging her feminine powers. Let us take a look at representations on witches throughout the history of cinema and culture:


Classic Representations

  1. The Wizard of Oz (1939)
    Key Witch: The Wicked Witch of the West
    Thus, the film definitively established the pop-culture trope of the evil witch with green skin, a pointed hat, and a cackling laugh. Her counterpart is Glinda, the good witch illustrating the other side of the coin.
  2. Hocus Pocus (1993)
    Key Witches: The Sanderson Sisters (Winifred, Sarah, and Mary)
    A cult classic marriage of comedy and halloween horror the sanderson sisters are odd, despicable and comedic.

Empowered Witches

  1. The Craft (1996)
    Witches may have once been seen as symbols of femininity, but through this teen drama, four teenage girls find their magical powers as they face the challenges of friendship, betrayal and most importantly, themselves.
  2. Practical Magic (1998)
    Starring as sisters who hail from a long line of witches, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman explore love as well as loss, while dealing with the social prejudice that goes hand in hand with being magical.

  1. The Witch (2015)

    A young witch character comes across the story which fell short of reaching her expectations but opened some doors regarding her witch status and her independence within the story.
  2. Harry Potter Series (2001–2011)
    The Hogwarts’ magic is further enriched by the presence of witches like Hermione Granger, Bellatrix Lestrange and Professor McGonagall showing a wide variety of personalities and moral characters.

Cultural Significance

Witches are depictions of female treachery and abuse of power, mostly presenting men’s fears and disdain towards women. Their progress from the trials of Salem to new waves of feminist reinterpretations is that of the evolution of attitudes of society. Contemporary films are presenting witches as strong women who fight for recognition, take pride in their difference and do not comply.
