Your Monster is a story of many issues melted into action and drama and tells the stories of the struggles of an actress, Laura Franco, played by Melissa Barrera. Recently, professional struggles have taken a toll on Laura as her boyfriend chooses to break up with her following a surgery she has been recovering from and, quite obviously, her mental health deteriorates. Still, things seem to worsen even more when she finds out about her ex setting up a musical which she was an integral part of. But, when everything seems to have gone wrong, things become interesting when Tommy Dewey’s character, a terrifying yet staggeringly charming monster named Henry, goes to quite a bizarre place and gives her the kind of comforting support she needs. Laura gradually learns how to embrace the monster, so she could hold on to her dreams while also coping with her destructive relationships.
Caroline Lindy has earned praise in the past for her wide range of executive skills and talents but Lindy, with great ambitions in the directing chair, her endeavors in this area and project are warranted to be unique considering that this feature length is her debut as a filmmaker. The comedy horror picture is an entertaining film, with Dewey and Garcia very much stealing the show. It is worth noting that Barrera’s performance received considerable acclaim, with most critics praising her versatility, as she beautifully switches back and forth from delicate to fierce. The film has also received positive reviews for its offbeat style, with many calling it a delightful spin on the classic ‘Beauty and the Beast’ tropes.
