Personal Insights

With ‘All the Lost Ones’ we are treated to an insightful analysis of human resilience in the face of disintegration of society as we know it. The distance creates the tension, the profundity of characterization and the nature of relations becomes more intense and interesting. I was particularly impressed with Jasmine Mathews as Nia, who was talented and strong yet fragile at times. What’s more, the depiction of climate change the motion picture tackles as a reason for wars strikes me as quite timely, given the condition of our environment and politics today.

Cultural Significance

This film fits in the expanding category of cli-fi which expresses general despair about the environmental depletion and government actions. By representing a civil war as a consequence of climate change policies, it questions the kinds of wars acceptable within a democratic society, in this case the war between peoples’ freedoms and the powers of the State. The Canadian film industry is further represented in this movie as a production which is directed by Mackenzie Donaldson who adds originality into the sci-fi thriller genre.
