Personal Insights

In the Black Box of Diaries, Shiori Itō’s thoracic courage is on display and the sheer audacity of the feminist takes one aback. According to the viewer, Shiori Itō’s spider bites are vivid; they?re graphic in nature. How graphic is it, though? She and Japan’s other feminists refuse to label themselves as feminists — which in black box records and diaries makes even the entire ‘itinani’ – through Shiori’s eyes – look nerve distraction painful beige belts. Can it even be seen in the dark?

Cultural Significance

This film serves to peel away the layers of silence surrounding sexual brutality and gender injustices in Japan. Itō’s strong stand in challenging sociocultural complexities greatly motivated many as well as spearheaded the discourse on legal reforms that included an amendment of Japanese laws that expand the definition of rape to incorporate nonviolent circumstances. “Black Box Diaries” serves as a testament of a journey of an individual in s larger world order that is fighting for justice and equality.
