💭 Personal Insights
Belleville Cop utilizes the same ol’ ‘fish out of water’ plot when Baaba comes to Miami expecting to live alone, only to have his mother pressure him for marriage and follow him to the United States. Sy is doing good comedy and is convinced as an actor which makes the film bearable though the storyline is unsurprising. Immigrant experience, racial stereotypes and Baaba’s African-French nature blends into the movie making it meaningful without being overly indulgent.
For those who have not seen the cop movies of Rachid Bouchareb who attempted to do more serious movies there is bound of be some disappointment as that originality and depth is missing from this story line. Sy and Guzmán’s dynamic honestly made me laugh but the height wasn’t as iconic as Eddie Murphy or Nick Nolte’s in 48 Hrs.
🌍 Cultural Significance
The film paints an impressive picture of modern-day Paris, more so, the Belleville area that is characterized by its huge North African, Chinese, and Jewish population, and more importantly, it highlights the problem that currently characterises French society where the notion of integration is problematic. The film depicts modern Paris and particularly modern day Paris. In terms of Paris, it offers a glimpse into the Belleville district, known for its large Chinese, Jews, and even North populace.
As a portrait of Europe, executive police officer Monsieur vrai also breaks the normal trope of Hollywood shooting with buddy cops for the USA, but instead shuffles the narrative by flying a Cop from Paris into the US, instead of sending a single cop out. This technique gives an important insight into how European immigrants in the US, American Polish society, language differences, and fitting into a different culture looks like.
🎥 Overall Verdict
Amar Sy’s prolific acting skills are top-notch, and if you enjoy watching light-hearted action filled comedy movies then going through ‘Belleville Cop’ will be a treat for you. Having said that, moderation is adviced – the plot is not revolutionizing. It is a cultural remix, however the defined storyline is safe to say cliche.
