Personal Insights
As The Holiday Junkie is based on her own experiences of mother’s loss that she suffered in the year 2012, Hewitt seems to be attached and is more personal to the movie. She has written, directed and starred in the movie which also serves to be her first time directing a feature film. She plays Hallisay’s love interest in the film, who is her husband in real life too. Their children do have cameo roles as well so indeed it was a family project.
Cultural Significance
Being a holiday film, “The Holiday Junkie” is different from the rest in that it does not shy away from tackling grief during a season that is supposed to be happy. It presents a storyline that perhaps many who ge t through the holidays by remembering their loss can relate to, offering hope for the future. The film, on the other hand, also illustrates a few family customs and how one can benefit from making new relationships, which further strengthens the argument that the holiday spirit is not one of despair but rather of healing and rejuvenation.
